There are many things that are not covered by a typical household insurance policy, and many people do not even realize what coverage they are missing until it is too late. It is often necessary to request an additional insurance rider to cover anything beyond basic fire and theft coverage.

Your Household Insurance May Not Cover the Following:

Here are some of the things that are often not covered by a basic household insurance policy:

Jewelry -- Even if you have theft insurance, valuable jewelry may not be covered.

Natural Disasters -- It is usually necessary to purchase additional insurance to cover floods, hurricanes and earthquakes. Sometimes the people who need this type of insurance the most are completely unable to get it.

Business Use of the Home -- Your regular household insurance usually does not cover anything related to your business.

Temporary Shelter -- If your home burns to the ground, will your insurance company pay to put you up in a hotel until your home can be rebuilt?

Medical Expenses -- If someone is injured in a house fire or accident in your home, will your household insurance cover the cost?

Additional Structures -- You will probably have to get an additional rider to cover outbuildings such as your garage, shed or barns.

Land and Landscaping -- Damage to the property itself is usually not covered in a typical household insurance policy.
