Protein shakes are delicious, creamy, smooth and can be made with just about any type of fruit or vegetable. They are the perfect way to replace a meal whether you are in a hurry or trying to lose weight.

Protein shakes are simple to make and the only piece of equipment you need is a container to shake the ingredients in, found in any store with a housewares department. If you want to get really fancy a blender makes super smooth protein shakes and with this option you can add in frozen fruit, ice to make it more like a smoothie or even some tangy sorbet to give an added little zing.

To use a protein shake as a meal replacement in order to give the optimal nutrition for your body and keep you feeling full longer the key is in the ingredients. Here are some ingredients you can add to your protein shake in order to maximize the health benefits you will receive.

Ingredients to Add to Protein Shakes

  1. Use almond milk instead of regular milk. It has fewer calories and also works well for the lactose intolerant. It also has a nice little flavor to enhance the shake.

  2. Add one teaspoon of psyllium husk which is an all natural powder fiber. It can be found at any health food store in the bulk section.

  3. A teaspoon of ground flax powder or flax oil is high in Omega 3 which is a natural anti-inflammatory. It is believed that this may help with arthritis, headaches, migraines and osteoporosis.

  4. Now add half a frozen banana and half a cup of frozen fruit for flavor and added vitamins and antioxidants.

When choosing a protein powder, you may have to shop around and try a few different ones to find one that suits your taste buds. Once you have found a powder you like to make your protein shakes, you can experiment with different ingredients to make your shakes taste even better.
