Investment and Stock Tips for Times of Recession

With stocks falling and jobs becoming more and more scarce, it can be difficult to know what to do with your investments during a recession. It is difficult to guess how long it will be before the stock market recovers. You may be wondering whether you should hold on to your stocks or pull your money out of the market and invest it somewhere else. Here are some investment and stock tips to help you during this time of recession.

Sell Your Stocks or Ride It Out?

When it comes to selling stocks during a bear market, there is no real consensus between experts. There are arguments to be made for each side, but ultimately it comes down to how comfortable you are with hanging tough when stock values fall.

If you are sure that you won't need to liquidate your investments until after the stock market recovers, no matter how long that takes, then you are probably in a good position to ride it out. The best gains following a bear market are usually made just as the market starts its recovery. If you pull out of the market, you could miss this period of rapid growth when things start to pick up again.

However, if you panic at any point during the downturn you are going to lose more money by trying to hold on to your stocks than you would have by selling them off when things started going bad. It could still be quite some time before the market fully recovers from this recession, so if you're afraid you're not going to be able to wait it out, it's better to sell sooner than later.

Sell Real Estate Stocks

I you have invested in any businesses related to home construction or other building, including building of commercial real estate, consider selling these stocks as soon as possible. It will probably be a long time before there is much demand for new construction in either the commercial or residential real estate market.

If You're Selling Your Home, Do It Soon

Don't try to wait out the recession if you need to sell your home. It could be a long time before housing prices recover. With housing prices still falling in many areas, if you try to wait you may end up getting even less for your house. The time to sell is already past. Waiting longer will not make it any less painful.

Invest in Silver

Many people say you should invest in gold when there is danger of inflation, which devalues the dollar, but silver may be a better option.  The reason for this is that it is cheaper.  When money gets tight during a recession, people will cut back their spending on unnecessary items such as jewelry.  For this reason, it is likely that people who want to buy jewelry during a recession will opt for silver instead of gold since it is so much cheaper.

Disclaimer

Of course, you should always do your own research before making decisions about your investments. Even the expects make mistakes, and I am not one of them.
