With so many banks being cautious about lending these days, getting qualified for a home loan can be quite difficult. People with great credit and good incomes are even having a hard time getting new mortgages, so as you can imagine it is even harder for those with bad credit. That’s because banks need to assess the risk for each mortgage before deciding if they are likely to make a profit.

Bad credit home loans are nothing more than mortgages for people with bad credit. You will always have a more difficult time getting a loan if you have bad credit, but I’m sure you already know that. What you really need to know is what you can do to increase your chances of qualifying for a bad credit mortgage.

Save Your Money

It used to be typical for a couple to save up thousands of dollars before approaching a bank for a mortgage. This is still a good strategy today. Many people are determined that they are not going to put a lot of their own money into purchasing their home, but this mindset is not productive. If you have bad credit and you really want a home loan, you have to do something to show the bank that you are serious. Walking in with 10-25% to put down on the home is a good start.

Know the Rules

You will have a much easier time qualifying if you know the rules the banks play by and make sure you adhere to them. There are two formulas used by most banks to figure out whether you can afford the house you are trying to purchase. First of all, your mortgage payment can’t be greater than 33% of your income. Also, if you add up your mortgage payment, car payments, credit card payments and other loan payments, the total amount of all of those debts cannot exceed 41% of your monthly income.

Getting Bad Credit Home Loans

To improve your chances of qualifying for a home loan, save as much money as possible and avoid borrowing on your credit cards or other credit until after your loan closes.  If your house payment or total debt ratio is too high, it’s possible that you are trying to buy more house than you can really afford.  Be honest with yourself and if you need to, settle for a less expensive home.  These tips should help you qualify for a bad credit home loan.
