Household insurance is insurance that covers a house and everything in it. This type of insurance usually covers loss due to fire or storm damage. It also covers loss of items in the home through theft. Damage caused by an accident, such as flooding caused by a faulty washing machine, is also usually covered.

It is important to read the policy before you sign an insurance agreement to make sure that it offers the type of coverage you need. There are some types of incidents that may require an additional insurance rider. Examples of this include flood, hurricane or earthquake insurance. If you live in an area where these types of disasters occur, you may even find that you can't get coverage for these types of incidents at all.

There are many companies that offer household insurance so shop around to get the best possible price. Your local independent insurance agent should be able to get you comparison quotes from several different companies and help you select the best deal. You can also find websites online that provide insurance quotes from a variety of companies. These websites usually have a form that you can fill out. After you submit the form, someone will call or e-mail you with a quote.

If you already have household insurance on your home, make sure it covers everything you need covered. If you can't find a copy of your policy, contact the company and ask them to send you a new copy so you can check to make sure your home is properly insured.
