Essentials of an Effective Alcohol Detox Diet: What to Eat
When undergoing alcohol detox, it is important to provide your body with foods that have a high nutritive value and plenty of fluids. During detox, you should avoid sugar, processed foods and refined foods and instead opt for plenty of raw fruits and vegetables. Below is a useful guide on what you should include in your alcohol detox diet.
Alcohol Detox Withdrawal Period
The withdrawal period during alcohol detox will last anywhere between several days to a week. During this time, it is important to give your body plenty of alkaline foods, since it has not yet regained its normal appetite. In addition, plenty of fluids such as water help to cleanse the body by flushing out alcohol and other harmful toxins that have built up in your system. As a substitute for water, you may drink fruit or vegetable juices or herbal teas such as chamomile.
What to Eat During Alcohol Detox
While detoxing, plan your meals so that you eat small portions of food regularly and frequently throughout the day. Your basic meal may include potatoes, whole grains, legumes, pasta and vegetables. Proteins are also essential in your alcohol detox diet. You may include eggs, fish, chicken and other types of non-fatty meats in your diet plan. During alcohol detox, the body requires more nutrients than normal to achieve successful recovery, so be sure to take multivitamin and multimineral supplements that include vitamins B and C, along with magnesium, calcium and potassium. A regular intake of Vitamin C in the form of a shake is also great for proper detoxification.
Avoid Alcohol During Alcohol Detox
It goes without saying that during alcohol detox, the last thing you should be consuming is alcohol – so avoid it altogether. Other foods that could harm you during this time and should be avoided include high fat fried foods, fast foods and ice cream. It is advisable to cut out completely or at least reduce your intake of caffeine and cut back on cigarette smoking during detox. Alcohol detox is not an easy process, but by providing your body with healthy nutrition, it becomes much easier to complete the detoxification process and turn your life around.
