The only thing most young drivers are worried about when they first receive their licenses is driving.  Keeping gas in the car and making sure that the car doesn't break down are the main if not the only factors a young driver is thinking about from day to day. One thing they usually don't think about much is car insurance. Young drivers who buy car insurance usually just go with a well known company instead of shopping around and end up paying a lot more than they should be. Here are some tips for buying cheap car insurance for young drivers.

Driving Record

The first point to consider is the young driver's driving record. A young driver with a clean driving record would be quoted a much lower price than say that of a driver who has lots of speeding tickets, accidents and DWI's.  By being a careful driver, you can keep your rates low.

Type of Car

Another factor that impacts the cost of insurance for young drivers is the type of car being insured. Most young drivers want to purchase the newest, hottest, and fastest sports cars out there if they can afford to do so. The type of car driven plays a very large part in the insurance costs. Usually young drivers who choose to drive safer vehicles from companies like Honda, Hyundai or Volvo can pay up to fifty percent less that those who choose to drive glamorous cars.

Fuel Efficiency and Safety Features

Currently most insurance companies offer discounts for those who drive hybrid cars which are more fuel efficient. In addition to picking a safer car insurance companies also look at added safety features when reducing insurance rates. Features like air bags, seat belts that are automatic and anti-lock brakes show insurance companies that the vehicle has stability control and seem less risky when insuring a young driver.

Young Driver Programs

Look for companies that cater to young drivers by having young driving programs. These programs usually reduce costs later as a result of getting good grades. This has been known to reduce insurance rates by ten percent. There are also credit rewards when the young driver has gone for a period of time without receiving any moving violations or being involved in any accidents. Some companies reduce costs if you take a refresher defensive driving course after completing the young driver program.

Shop Around

Instead of taking the word of someone you know who says their insurance company is the cheapest, get all of your personal driver facts together and shop around for the best quote.  There is not a single company that has the best rates for everyone.  Some of the companies that offer young driver programs are Esurance, Allstate, Geico, State Farm and Progressive.  These companies are a good place to start when trying to find cheap car insurance for young drivers.
